Argentina - Carlos Tevez Biography

Carlos Tevez is one of the most promising players to currently wear the Argentina shirt. The two times South American player of the year, has been described as the new Maradona and the man to make Argentina a successful nation once again. Maradona once described Tevez as the "Argentine prophet for the 21st century".
It all started back in 2001 when Tevez was called up to the U17 squad for the Fifa World Championship in Trinidad and Tobago. Tevez scored two goals in that tournament helping Argentina finish in fourth place.
In 2003 Carlos Tevez won the South American Championship with the Argentine U20 team in Uruguay. Tevez didn't have the best of tournaments being repeatedly played out of position due to the wealth of attacking talent in the team. Tevez however declined to play for Argentina U20 in the fifa World Championship, instead showing his loyalty to Boca Juniors in the intercontinental cup.

The Olympic Games brought Tevez to the attention of the world with a series of breath taking displays. Tevez finished the Olympics not only with a gold medal but with eight goals from six appearances making him the top scorer of the competition. It was after the Olympics when Tevez's personal life was dragged through the gutter by the press. This led Argentina coach Jose Peckerman to drop Tevez from the national team stating that Carlos won't be considered until his personal life is sorted out.

There was plenty of interest surrounding Carlos Tevez for the World Cup in Germany in 2006. Tevez was making sporadic appearances for Argentina all through there qualifying campaign and the press was constantly speculating whether Tevez would even go. But of course common sense prevailed and despite his personal problems Carlos had the opportunity to light up the biggest tournament in world football.

Argentina was drawn in a tough group containing Holland, Ivory Coast and Serbia. The first game against the Ivory Coast saw Tevez start on the bench in Argentina's 2-1 victory. The second game in the group made the world sit up and take notice as Argentina romped to a 6-0 victory over Serbia.
The game produced goal of the tournament when a 21 pass move was superbly finished off by Cambiasso. Tevez played his part in the game coming on as a 58th minute substitute, scoring Argentina's fifth and setting up Lionel Messi for number six. Argentina progressed from there group as winners after a 0-0 draw with Holland and faced Mexico in the second round. Argentina made hard work of the tie and with 75 minutes gone and the score 1-1 Tevez was again brought off the bench and was shortly followed by Aimar and Messi, not a bad trio to bring on. The Argies took the game to extra time before a wonder strike from Rodriguez Maxi settle the tie. Argentina then faced host nation Germany in the quarter finals and Tevez was given a starting role just off Crespo in attack. The game was a tense affair taking both sides a while to get into there stride. The match finished 1-1 and went to penalties, which Argentina lost 4-2. The game will more than likely be remembered for the fighting between the two sets of teams after the match finished. But what was evident is that Tevez has a bright international future ahead of him.
